child social life

Socialization is an important aspect of leading a healthy happy life in future and the habit must be inculcated from childhood. Earlier, in the era of joint families, socialization was natural and easy for kids as they got to live with so many family members, siblings & cousins. But with the contemporary evolution of nuclear families, mostly with single child, has ruptured the natural easy route of socialization for children. Thus, a lot of children today have problems in getting socialized easily. The post here offers the necessary tips to socialize your child.

Take him/her to peers

You must take this effort to create peer group for your child. If you are staying in a flat, there would be plenty of kids to play with. Introduce your child to those kids which will help him to have his own peer group. Both of you might devote enough attention to the little one but he would be most comfortable with his feelings among his peers. You might have to put some extra effort if your kid is little introvert.

If he/she doesn’t have anybody of same age in your flat, you can take your child to parks nearby where the kid will get a chance to meet with peers often. The fun activities in the park with friends help the kid to open up and get closer with the other kids there.

Take the kid to family functions

Socialization does not only mean mingling with peer group. A child must be taught to mix with people of all ages which will further inculcate age-appropriate behavior for him/her. Thus, you must make sure to take him/her to family functions so that the kid gets a chance to understand people of different ages and explore the various family relationships.

Get the child in a co-ed school

You must admit your child in a co-education school as this way he/she will have the chance to mingle with kids from both sexes. This plays a very important part in the socialization of a child as he/she grows up.

Find out his/her interest

Find out his/her knack- whether the kid loves football or has a knack for music and so on. Then, admit him/her in an institution or coaching center accordingly so that the child gets another chance to mix with people. –

Talk to teacher

If your child is too introvert and shy away from mingling with friends in the class, you might have to talk to the class teacher for extra attention.

growth chart

Growth in children is determined by number of factors such as birth weight, gestational age, feeding type, nutrition, parental stature, any chronic illness & special care needs. There are growth charts that help to assess the physical growth experienced in children, infants & adolescents. In times of routine screening, the growth (physical) in children is assessed by measuring the child’s stature, weight & head circumference.

Here is a brief guide on how to use growth chart followed by a short note on the benefits of using it-

Before getting into the user guide for growth charts, you must know that accuracy in measurement or equipment technique is a must as these measurements are essential for fundamental decisions regarding the child.

• The baby must be weighed unclothed on an electronic scale or calibrated beam.
• The scale must be accurate with maximum 20 kg weight in ten grams increments & easily “zeroed” & recently calibrated.

Gauging infant length

• Use standardized length board that comes with movable footpiece & fixed headpiece.
• There must be minimum two trained personnel to ensure precise measurement.
• Measure infant sans shoes- the little mustn’t wear anything other than diaper or light underclothing.
• Lay the baby on his back up & chest against board surface. The eyes must look upwards & keep the legs fully extended. The toes must point upward & keep the feet flat against foot piece.
• Measure stature to nearest 0.1 centimeter.

Gauging head circumference

• Position tape above eyebrow, ears & largest part on back oh head.
• The tape must be flexible & non-stretchable.
• Measure head circumference to nearest 0.1 centimeter.

Gauging children & adolescents

• This applies to a child older over 2-3 years of age who can stand independently.
• The child must be measured standing on digital scale or beam-balance.
• The child must not wear anything other than light outer clothing or light undergarments.
• Weight to be recorded to nearest 0.1 kilogram.

Children who are incapable to stand independently & have to be supported by somebody else while measuring, the result should be taken subtracting weight of the supporting person. Children with special needs might require wheelchair or sit-down scales.

Gauging stature/length in children & adolescents

The stadiometer for the stature measurements need-

• Vertical board (wall mounted) with metric rule attached to it.
• Horizontal headpiece which could be set with head superior of the child.

Usage guide:

• The child will stand against stadiometer sans shoes, heels brought together, arms at two sides, legs straight & shoulders relaxed.
• The child must look straight ahead.
• The headpiece should touch head crown of the child.
• Measurer’s eyes must be in parallel position with headpiece.
• Measure stature to nearest 0.1 centimeter.

Benefits of using growth chart

The growth chart should be used in timely intervals as it helps to assess & monitor the range of growth in the child. Updated knowledge on your child’s growth will help in identifying the nutrition risks in case the growth does not tally with the needed growth at that particular age- so that you can take needful steps on time.
