child social life

Socialization is an important aspect of leading a healthy happy life in future and the habit must be inculcated from childhood. Earlier, in the era of joint families, socialization was natural and easy for kids as they got to live with so many family members, siblings & cousins. But with the contemporary evolution of nuclear families, mostly with single child, has ruptured the natural easy route of socialization for children. Thus, a lot of children today have problems in getting socialized easily. The post here offers the necessary tips to socialize your child.

Take him/her to peers

You must take this effort to create peer group for your child. If you are staying in a flat, there would be plenty of kids to play with. Introduce your child to those kids which will help him to have his own peer group. Both of you might devote enough attention to the little one but he would be most comfortable with his feelings among his peers. You might have to put some extra effort if your kid is little introvert.

If he/she doesn’t have anybody of same age in your flat, you can take your child to parks nearby where the kid will get a chance to meet with peers often. The fun activities in the park with friends help the kid to open up and get closer with the other kids there.

Take the kid to family functions

Socialization does not only mean mingling with peer group. A child must be taught to mix with people of all ages which will further inculcate age-appropriate behavior for him/her. Thus, you must make sure to take him/her to family functions so that the kid gets a chance to understand people of different ages and explore the various family relationships.

Get the child in a co-ed school

You must admit your child in a co-education school as this way he/she will have the chance to mingle with kids from both sexes. This plays a very important part in the socialization of a child as he/she grows up.

Find out his/her interest

Find out his/her knack- whether the kid loves football or has a knack for music and so on. Then, admit him/her in an institution or coaching center accordingly so that the child gets another chance to mix with people. –

Talk to teacher

If your child is too introvert and shy away from mingling with friends in the class, you might have to talk to the class teacher for extra attention.

Children tend to active from an early age but the common problem of obesity, especially in the older kids, prevent them from physical activities. This is a serious situation as physical inaction only abets overweight problems and a number of other concerns like lack of confidence, concentration & even poor academic marks. As per the children fitness tips shared by experts, you must encourage your kids for physical activities for a healthy body, better social adaptability & a sharp mind. The article here focuses on how to encourage your children to be physically active.

Start early

You must inculcate the habit of physical activities from an early age in your kid. Too much of concentration on video games & cartoon soaps have led to couch-potato syndrome from toddler age today- which should be discouraged. Take your kids to parks where they can run free and make friends with other children for more fun & games.

Involve yourself

Your kids will love to see their parents or other elders in the family getting involved with them in the physical activities. Modern society is characterized by nuclear families with single child and the kids tend to suffer from lack of friends. This can also de-motivate them from taking to physical activities as most of such activities demand at least one partner. If you can take some time out to play with the kid, he will be happy to respond readily.

Age-appropriate activities

Every physical activity is not suitable for all ages. For example- the pre-schoolers are not so comfortable with organized sports as they often can’t follow the complex rules. They should be engaged in simple activities like ball throw, running, cycling on toddler bikes etc. As your kid crosses 5/6 years of age, you can introduce him to the world of organized sports such basketball, football, cricket, badminton, tennis etc.

Register him into sports club

As your kid starts growing, it would be great if you can admit him into a sports club or institution. Such an affiliation would be really encouraging for him as he would be able to make new friends and enjoy sports with peers.

Don’t overdo

Your kid cannot learn everything. So, don’t overdo with the physical activities as it might interfere with his studies and health. Too much involvement in multiple sport clubs would lead to unnecessary exhaustion and deprive him of a normal quality life.

Seasonal allergies are common in kids but some might also suffer from year-round allergies. If the child shows allergy symptoms even after a change in season, it could be that the little one has perennial allergy. Allergies are triggered when body’s immunity system recognizes some substances as foreign & launches attack, triggering symptoms. A kid can experience allergy to almost everything around, exposed to him such as mold, dust, cold, pet dander & certain foods as well. However, it’s to note here that all-year allergies are mostly due to indoor allergens such as pet saliva or dander, indoor mold & dust mites.

All-year allergy symptoms

The all-year allergy symptoms in children include runny nose, clear mucus, watery, itchy eyes, hives, sneezing & dark circles below the eyes. If your kid has been experiencing any of these symptoms even after the cold months, it could be that he is suffering from perennial allergy.

Talk to pediatrician

If the child is showing symptoms of perennial allergy, you should not delay to make an appointment to your pediatrician. The pediatrician would carry on allergy tests on the child to determine the actual cause of the symptoms. In case, the reason is allergy, the pediatrician might ask you to consult a specialist in allergy.
You will obviously consult the allergy expert but when the all-year allergy is due to in-home allergens, there are some steps that you would have to follow yourself- to reduce exposure to indoor allergens.

Regular cleaning

You must make sure to clean the house regularly. A daily sweep & mop at least once in a day is mandatory to ensure a healthy environment. The experts also advise to go for vacuum cleaners for a thorough cleaning in hard-to-reach places. You must vacuum your house minimum once or twice a month. It’s advised to take to a vacuum cleaner with HEPA filter for better air purification indoors.

Remove carpet & heavy drapes

If your child is having allergic reactions due to dust mite, it’s better not to place carpet in his room. Do not heavy draperies as well. It’s because these heavy things collect comparatively more dirt than floor surface. The bedding must get a weekly wash & should be dried well in hot dryer before placing it on bed. The stuffed toys tend to collect dirt & dust as well. Hence either you have to remove them from your son’s chamber or have to be careful for a timely wash.

Good ventilation

As allergies can be caused from molds & mildew, you must make it sure to maintain proper ventilation throughout the home. Keep the windows open to allow sunlight and fresh air to come in- an airy bright ambience will prevent unnecessary moisture growth in the house that will further prevent the growth of mold & mildew.

Minimize contact with pet

If the allergy specialist or pediatrician has identified pet issues behind allergy problems you must make sure minimal contact with pet fort the child. You might have to consider alternate home for your pet here.

growth chart

Growth in children is determined by number of factors such as birth weight, gestational age, feeding type, nutrition, parental stature, any chronic illness & special care needs. There are growth charts that help to assess the physical growth experienced in children, infants & adolescents. In times of routine screening, the growth (physical) in children is assessed by measuring the child’s stature, weight & head circumference.

Here is a brief guide on how to use growth chart followed by a short note on the benefits of using it-

Before getting into the user guide for growth charts, you must know that accuracy in measurement or equipment technique is a must as these measurements are essential for fundamental decisions regarding the child.

• The baby must be weighed unclothed on an electronic scale or calibrated beam.
• The scale must be accurate with maximum 20 kg weight in ten grams increments & easily “zeroed” & recently calibrated.

Gauging infant length

• Use standardized length board that comes with movable footpiece & fixed headpiece.
• There must be minimum two trained personnel to ensure precise measurement.
• Measure infant sans shoes- the little mustn’t wear anything other than diaper or light underclothing.
• Lay the baby on his back up & chest against board surface. The eyes must look upwards & keep the legs fully extended. The toes must point upward & keep the feet flat against foot piece.
• Measure stature to nearest 0.1 centimeter.

Gauging head circumference

• Position tape above eyebrow, ears & largest part on back oh head.
• The tape must be flexible & non-stretchable.
• Measure head circumference to nearest 0.1 centimeter.

Gauging children & adolescents

• This applies to a child older over 2-3 years of age who can stand independently.
• The child must be measured standing on digital scale or beam-balance.
• The child must not wear anything other than light outer clothing or light undergarments.
• Weight to be recorded to nearest 0.1 kilogram.

Children who are incapable to stand independently & have to be supported by somebody else while measuring, the result should be taken subtracting weight of the supporting person. Children with special needs might require wheelchair or sit-down scales.

Gauging stature/length in children & adolescents

The stadiometer for the stature measurements need-

• Vertical board (wall mounted) with metric rule attached to it.
• Horizontal headpiece which could be set with head superior of the child.

Usage guide:

• The child will stand against stadiometer sans shoes, heels brought together, arms at two sides, legs straight & shoulders relaxed.
• The child must look straight ahead.
• The headpiece should touch head crown of the child.
• Measurer’s eyes must be in parallel position with headpiece.
• Measure stature to nearest 0.1 centimeter.

Benefits of using growth chart

The growth chart should be used in timely intervals as it helps to assess & monitor the range of growth in the child. Updated knowledge on your child’s growth will help in identifying the nutrition risks in case the growth does not tally with the needed growth at that particular age- so that you can take needful steps on time.

Breastfeeding is really vital for the little ones but the mothers should be careful about stopping the practice on time as well. According to experts, a baby must be breastfed for 6 months minimum – some of the moms even go for a year-long nursing. While it’s good to conjoin solid foods with breast milk after 6 months till a year, many moms need to stop breastfeeding after 7 months maximum, which is okay as per doctors. The post below offers tips on how to stop breastfeeding.

Get a plan

It would be easy to get into weaning routine and consequent adjustments if you start by a weaning plan. Set a deadline as when to start and stick to it. You must remember that you can’t stop breastfeeding entirely as decide to wean. You have to go gradual here and it might take a month to introduce complete weaning.

Eliminate one by one

You have to start by eliminating 1 feeding after another and hold on to that elimination for 3-4 days at a stretch before you eliminate the second feeding. Remember the most important sessions are during bedtime, nap-time & morning. These are the most comforting for the baby & must be eliminated at the last. You would start by eliminating least important session for the little. Do not ever eliminate the morning & nighttime nursing sessions together. You might start with the morning one first and if it succeeds, work-on the night-time one.

Don’t initiate

As you proceed with your weaning sessions, your child might forget about the sessions that have been eliminated. In such a situation, don’t take the initiative to remind him or her. If your baby is happy without the session, it implies that the needs are already met.

Substitution or distraction

This is a great weaning technique when you are in the later stages of the process. As you child asks for a nursing session, you can distract him to something interesting for him, such a favorite toy or a snack and so on. You can even take him out for a short walk so that his mind stays diverted for the time being. The trick is to carry the method as the nursing session approaches so that the child stays pre-occupied with other things at the scheduled time. If he is busy with other activities beforehand, he might forget about asking for the feeding as well.
