In times of routine screening, the growth (physical) in children is assessed by measuring the child’s stature, weight & head circumference.

Here is a brief guide on how to use growth chart followed by a short note on the benefits of using it-

Before getting into the user guide for growth charts, you must know that accuracy in measurement or equipment technique is a must as these measurements are essential for fundamental decisions regarding the child.


• The baby must be weighed unclothed on an electronic scale or calibrated beam.
• The scale must be accurate with maximum 20 kg weight in ten grams increments & easily “zeroed” & recently calibrated.

Gauging infant length

• Use standardized length board that comes with movable footpiece & fixed headpiece.
• There must be minimum two trained personnel to ensure precise measurement.
• Measure infant sans shoes- the little mustn’t wear anything other than diaper or light underclothing.
• Lay the baby on his back up & chest against board surface. The eyes must look upwards & keep the legs fully extended. The toes must point upward & keep the feet flat against foot piece.
• Measure stature to nearest 0.1 centimeter.

Gauging head circumference

• Position tape above eyebrow, ears & largest part on back oh head.
• The tape must be flexible & non-stretchable.
• Measure head circumference to nearest 0.1 centimeter.

Gauging children & adolescents

• This applies to a child older over 2-3 years of age who can stand independently.
• The child must be measured standing on digital scale or beam-balance.
• The child must not wear anything other than light outer clothing or light undergarments.
• Weight to be recorded to nearest 0.1 kilogram.

Children who are incapable to stand independently & have to be supported by somebody else while measuring, the result should be taken subtracting weight of the supporting person. Children with special needs might require wheelchair or sit-down scales.

• Vertical board (wall mounted) with metric rule attached to it.
• Horizontal headpiece which could be set with head superior of the child.

Usage guide:

• The child will stand against stadiometer sans shoes, heels brought together, arms at two sides, legs straight & shoulders relaxed.
• The child must look straight ahead.
• The headpiece should touch head crown of the child.
• Measurer’s eyes must be in parallel position with headpiece.
• Measure stature to nearest 0.1 centimeter.
